Autism from the Soul - The Thanksgiving Tree
On a cool Thanksgiving weekend in Michigan, Scott reflects on a small tree in the front yard—one that he and his wife, Penni, rescued from a dumpster and planted with hope three years ago. Though weak and struggling, they nurtured it with dreams of future shade, a treehouse, and admiration from passersby. Despite its slow growth and doubtful neighbors, Scott remains optimistic, a trait he’s carried since his school days when he played every game with full effort, even on a losing team. This hopeful perspective extends to his 22-month-old son, Evan, who was born with medical challenges. Despite others’ doubts, he and Penni see Evan’s potential and embrace him with love, just as they did the tree. Whether or not Evan or the tree thrives as they envision, their unwavering hope and determination prove that true success lies in
perseverance, not perfection.
Autism from the Soul - Becoming a Woman
Ainslee was diagnosed with Autism (PDD-NOS) and a seizure disorder at age five. Now 17, she is high-functioning in some ways but faces challenges in others. Her parents worried about how she would handle puberty, especially getting her first period. They prepared by involving her school in discussions, buying books, and
explaining changes in simple terms.
When the day finally arrived just before her 11th birthday, instead of reacting with fear or distress, Ainslee surprised them with excitement, announcing, “Guess what? I got my period! I’m so happy, I’m growing up!” Her joyful reaction left her parents stunned, as they had expected anxiety or fear. Ainslee continues to defy expectations with her unpredictable yet memorable responses to life’s challenges, reminding her family that growth
and understanding can take unexpected forms.
