Article from an Autism Today Foundation Board Member Supporting Autistic Adults: A Mother’s Call for Change Rita Miceli highlights the struggles faced by many autistic individuals and their families, particularly the drastic drop in support services once a child reaches adulthood.
As the mother of a nonverbal autistic son, she expresses her deep concerns about his future, especially when she and her husband are no longer able to care for him. She emphasizes that every autistic person has unique needs, yet families are left to navigate a confusing and inadequate system on their own. The lack of financial aid, employment opportunities, and housing options creates additional stress, making it even harder for families already carrying significant emotional and financial burdens.
Rita is a Board Member of the Autism Today Foundation. A life-long educator and a long-time advocate for autism awareness, she is a mother of four and a contributor to the international bestselling book "Ambitious Women Rise: The Amazing Stories of Women Overcoming Obstacles and Creating the Life of Their Dreams." With
over three decades of educational experience, Rita teaches in the Autism and Behavioural Science Graduate Program at St. Clair College in Ontario.

Autism from the Soul Kids Say the Darnedest Things
My son Hunter was born with a rare chromosome disorder, making it harder for him to learn and communicate, but he is the most loving child. When my daughter Brooke was five, she asked why Hunter was different, and
I explained it in a way she could understand. Later, at a salon, she saw a man with special needs speaking loudly like Hunter and sweetly said, “He must be missing a chromosome too!”—a moment of pure understanding I will never forget.

Autism from the Soul The Love of a Sister
When my twins were three, we learned that my son, Dean, had autism. It was overwhelming at first, but we jumped into action, enrolling him in therapies and a special-needs preschool—where his sister, Julianne, happily tagged along, always looking out for him. One day, after buying autism awareness t-shirts, Julianne asked what a "cure" for autism meant, and when I explained, she simply said, “But Mommy, I like Dean just the way he is.” In that moment, I realized that while autism was part of our journey, so was unconditional love—and I wouldn’t change a
thing.

Books for You From Struggle to Strength A Father's Journey with Autism and the Power of Hope and Positivity Harry
Psaros wasn’t always the dad he is today. Like many fathers, he struggled to accept his child’s autism diagnosis—too stubborn, too caught up in what he thought fatherhood should be. But over time, he realized that his son Gus needed him to step up, not step back. In From Struggle to Strength, Harry opens up about his journey, sharing the mistakes he made, the lessons he learned, and how embracing his role transformed not just his son's life, but his own.
