Autism Acceptance Month Celebrating Neurodiversity & Promoting Inclusion
Autism Acceptance Month celebrates neurodiversity, promotes inclusion, and supports people with autism.
The shift from "awareness" to "acceptance," began in 2011, and focuses on embracing autistic individuals rather than just recognizing the condition. Autism is a beautiful and natural variation in human neurology. It affects communication, social interactions, and behavior, but every autistic person is unique. Some may need extra support, while others bloom independantly. Nonetheless, we all deserve respect, inclusion and oppportunities to shine. Studies show that acceptance leads to better mental health and self-esteem, proving that a more inclusive world makes a real difference! We need to embrace neurodiversity, make more spaces more inclusive, and recognize the strengths of autistic individuals. Let’s continue to make the world a more welcoming
place for everyone.
Article from Autism Today Board Member Marcia Eckerd, Ph.D. A Way That Works for Parents Teaching Autistic Children
Parenting an autistic child isn’t about fitting them into a mold—it’s about celebrating who they are. In A Way That Works for Parents Teaching Autistic Children, psychologist Marcia Eckerd, Ph.D., shares Robert Bernstein’s approach: instead of trying to steer children in a different direction, parents should meet
them where they are.
Rather than redirecting their focus, step into their world. If they love lining up toy cars, line them up together. If they’re fascinated by spinning objects, explore that joy with them. Growth happens naturally when
children feel safe and understood. Progress takes time, and autistic children are especially sensitive to emotions—if they sense frustration, they may withdraw. But when parents embrace their child’s unique way of learning, it builds trust, connection,
and confidence.
By supporting them at their own pace, parents help them thrive in a way that feels right for them.
Board Member Quotes - Tim Goldstein
“Neurotypical isn’t a neurotype, it is a social contract that you buy in to.” “Neurodiversity is all humans; it isn’t just those different thinking people.” “I feel I belong when my ideas are considered as if there is a potential that they are right instead of being dismissed as different.”
