Autism Acceptance Month Embracing Neurodiversity: Celebrating the Unique Strengths of Autism
Adam Farris breaks down autism in a super relatable way, explaining that it’s a neurodevelopmental condition that affects communication, social skills, and sensory experiences. But the key takeaway? Autism looks different for everyone, and that’s something to celebrate! Instead of focusing on challenges, he encourages people to embrace neurodiversity and appreciate the unique strengths autistic individuals bring to the table. His message is all about fostering acceptance, understanding, and creating a world where differences aren’t just tolerated—they’re valued.
Article from Autism Today Board Member Sharon Fried Buchalter A Mother's Journey Raising an Autistic Daughter
As both a psychologist and a mother, Sharon thought she understood autism—but raising her own autistic daughter taught her so much more. Her daughter found comfort in routines rather than friendships, and while Sharon longed for traditional mother-daughter moments, her daughter connected in her own way. It was hard at
times, but Sharon learned that love doesn’t have to look the way we expect.
Now, as a young woman, Sharon's daughter is thriving on her own terms. Their bond may not include late-night chats or spontaneous hugs, but it is built on love, patience, and understanding. To any parent on
this journey, love exists, even when it’s quiet, even when it looks different.

Research News Promising Discovery Could Lead to New Autism Treatments Scientists found that two special proteins in the brain, MDGA2 and BDNF, need to stay balanced to prevent autism-like behaviors—at least in mice. When there's not enough MDGA2, BDNF becomes too active, making brain signals too strong. This leads to behaviors like repetitive movements and social difficulties. The good news? When researchers used a treatment that acted like MDGA2 and calmed down BDNF, the behaviors improved. This could help scientists develop new ways to support people with autism in the future!
Research News Fresh Insights Into Sleep and Autism The Simons Sleep Project has shared a new set of data that looks at how sleep works in teens with autism. They collected info from over 100 adolescents with autism and their siblings, using wearable devices at home to track things like movement, heart rate, and skin temperature while they slept. Parents also helped out by filling in sleep diaries and
questionnaires. The research reveals that individuals with autism often experience distinct sleep behaviors, including difficulties with sleep onset, shorter sleep durations, and increased nighttime awakenings. The data also highlights variations in
sleep patterns across different subgroups within the autism spectrum, providing a deeper understanding of how sleep disturbances might relate to other autism characteristics. The idea is to give researchers a better understanding of how sleep patterns in
autistic individuals compare to those without autism. The data’s now available to approved researchers and could lead to better ways of supporting sleep issues in the autism community.

Autism from the Soul From Y to A through Z
This is a touching story about a dad and his daughter, Sami, who has Down syndrome. From early on, he and his wife made reading part of their daily routine. When Sami was around eight months old, they started using a program to help her learn letters. For months, it didn’t seem like much was happening—no big “aha”
moments.
But then, just before she turned two, Sami blew them away by recognizing 22 out of the 26 letters! It came out of nowhere and totally caught them off guard—in the best way. It’s one of those beautiful reminders that even when you can’t see progress right away, it’s happening behind the scenes. Patience and persistence
really do pay off.

Autism from the Soul Come to Celebrate with Me
This is a heartwarming story about a mom celebrating her daughter Sandra’s 15th birthday in a really meaningful way. In Hispanic culture, turning 15 is a big deal—it’s called a quinceañera and it marks a girl's step
into young womanhood.
Sandra has Rett Syndrome, a rare neurological condition that affects how she develops and moves. But her mom didn’t let that stop the celebration. Instead of a big party, she organized a special religious gathering in Miami to bring people together and celebrate Sandra’s life. She invited friends, family, and other parents to join in—not just to honor Sandra’s birthday, but to recognize the light and love she brings to everyone around her. It’s a beautiful reminder that every life is worth celebrating, in whatever way feels right.
